As promised on my social media accounts, today I am sharing with you my experience with a juice cleanse I did last weekend! In the past couple of months, I wasn’t feeling like myself or good in my own skin. I have to admit that I cheated on my clean eating more than my usual weekly meal! And, with the terrace season in full swing and the events I was attending, alcohol was harder to resist! I was more inclined to indulge on sweets and processed food than the usual. This led me to feel sluggish and swollen :( I couldn’t stand feeling like that which is why a month ago I decided to get back on the healthy wagon! What you should know about me is that when I set a goal for myself, I become very determined and fully devote to it! So, I went back to my healthy eating habits and upped my training to a regular five or six times a week. Then, I decided to schedule a three days juice cleanse to detoxify my body and nourish it with the right nutriments!
The juice cleanse I chose to do is a three days one with Total Cleanse. It consists of drinking six 500mL fresh cold-pressed juices per day, made mainly with organic fruits and vegetables. There are several levels of cleanses and since I am already very health conscious, the “Purify Cleanse” which is the most extreme (four of the six juices are green ones) is designed for me! It eliminates most carbohydrates, fruit and sugar from my diet. Because it is very low in protein and I didn’t want my body to start using my muscles for energy, I didn’t do more than three days of detoxing! So, I placed my online order two weeks ago and arranged to have it delivered the day before my long weekend at work. I was looking forward to doing it until two days before! I was telling myself: “You are simply insane! No food for three days? What are you getting yourself into?” But I wasn’t going to abandon before even beginning!
There is a preparation phase two to four days prior to the cleanse and a transition one to regular food for a few days after. So it ends up being a full week adventure! The preparation phase is not obligatory but greatly recommended. It involves not having any sugar, dairy, meat, alcohol or coffee and replacing them with fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and fish. It actually allows your body to transition well into the cleanse. What I found the most difficult was letting go of caffeine! I couldn’t have that sweet and tender moment with my morning coffee anymore :( That was harsh! I am sure my coffee addict friends can relate!
It is now the morning of day one! The company suggests drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning then your first juice within the hour. It is better to drink the juice in 15-30 minutes while it’s still fresh. Then you drink a bottle every two to three hours and the last one an hour before bedtime. The bottles are numbered and you have to follow the order when consuming them during the day. So, I woke up, drank two glasses of water (which is what I usually do), packed my lunchbox with my six juices of the day and left for my 13 hours shift at the pharmacy. I planned to do the cleanse while working because I figured it would pass by faster. Also, preparing my meals and lunches for the day was much easier! And so, my work day started with the “Green Energy” juice!
I found the first day to be the most difficult because I was still lightheaded from my caffeine withdraw and I felt like my stomach was always empty. I would get hungry within two hours after each juice. And getting used to not chewing anything was the hardest! I just wanted to eat pretty much everything and anything around me. From candies, cereal to a simple carrot! Even my dog’s food became interesting! I wish I was kidding! By the way, the only other drinks you are allowed having are water as well as green and herbal tea. I found drinking hot herbal tea helped to sooth my tummy and make me feel less hungry :) I had my last Creamy Cashew bottle of the day back at home. I decided to heat it and enjoy it like a hot cup of milk before bedtime. I personally felt like I lacked energy throughout the day. And even though I was at work, all I could think of was food…food and more food! I couldn’t wait to sleep and have the day be over!
Day two was much better! I woke up with a stomach flat like a board up until bedtime! Woot! Woot! I didn’t feel weak! I wasn’t starving as much and the urge to eat solid food was not as present! I did think of cheating a few times though, especially in the afternoon! I wanted just one blueberry or a pizza ;) No, no, no... I had come too far! What you also need to know is that it is not suggested to exercise during the cleanse. The juices provide your body with approximately 1200 calories and burning more aside from you daily activities would be unhealthy. Yoga or stretching sessions are accepted and a meditation or a massage recommended. The purpose is to rest your body :) Day three was definitely the best! Stomach even more flat! Almost inverted ;) No food urges! I could actually look at food or smell it and not want it! And felt definitely more energized! Had only 24 hours to go! Went to bed proud that I went through the whole three days without cheating! Woohoo!
Please note that you will not loose weight doing this cleanse and it is not the main goal! I did however loose 3 pounds which were mainly du to water weight. Because of the huge amount of liquids you take, you will be going to the bathroom often but not for number two! Be assured ;) Now, even though a part of you wants to, it is suggested to take it slow and not have a celebratory feast on the first day after! The menu on day one post-cleanse can only be fruits, vegetables and nuts. On day two you can start adding grains, seeds and fish and slowly after that dairy, meat and caffeine. It has been two days since I finished the cleanse and I totally agree with these recommendations! You will feel that you can’t eat too much or too heavy. You are simply happy having a bowl of fruits and a good salad! You truly are! I haven’t had sugar, meat, dairy, coffee or alcohol yet and I don’t really miss them! No sugar or sweet cravings at all! I am enjoying going back to my workout regimen and I feel light, lean, rejuvenated and like a new me! But most importantly, I am more motivated to keep on eating healthy and gained a wonderful sense of accomplishment :)
Do I regret doing it? Not at all! Was it easy? Definitely not! Was it worth it? Absolutely! Will I do it again? Probably! But only when really necessary! Because I enjoy food way too much :)
Let me know if you have tried a juice cleanse! How was your experience?
